U.S. Green Building Council Conference
Eric Burkey and Matt Forrer attended the U.S. Green Building Council’s conference held in Chicago, IL. They participated in several seminars and the Construction Management class, including the exhibition space. Over 20,000 people attended the event. This was the largest attended Green Building event.

Berks County Community Foundation and Community Conference Center
Construction of the new LEED-certified headquarters for The Berks County Community Foundation and Community Conference Center will begin in the Spring of 2008 with Burkey Construction Co. / Alvin H. Butz, Inc. Joint Venture serving as the Construction Manager. The facility will be located at the corner of Third and Court Streets in downtown Reading.

The Foundation’s goal is to construct a facility that sets an example of environmental stewardship and to create a structure that is LEED-certified. LEED is an accreditation process designed by the U.S. Green Building Council, which honors the construction of buildings that are healthier for the environment and for the people who live and work in them. These structures are referred to as “green” buildings. The facility will consist of a Community Conference Center on the first floor, the Foundation’s offices on the second floor, and tenant and expansion space on the third floor. Upon completion, the structure will represent the first LEED-certified office facility in Berks County.

Lancaster Laboratories Addition - See the live Webcam
Burkey Construction Co. was recently awarded the contract to construct a 50,000 square foot, three-story building addition to Lancaster Laboratories’ South Campus facility in New Holland, PA. The building addition will match the existing buildings on the campus. Construction began in October. Lancaster Labs is the largest contract lab in the country.

Boscov's Department Store Renovation at the Willow Grove Park Mall
In July, Burkey Construction began work on the Boscov’s Department Store at the Willow Grove Park Mall in Willow Grove, PA. The project consists of the total renovation of a three-story, 19,500 square foot facility. The store is scheduled to open in April of 2008.

Construction started on R/C Theatres in Reading PA - See the Live Webcam


Construction of the R/C Theatres located at 30 N. Second Street in downtown Reading began in August. The 11-screen movie complex, which includes an IMAX large-scale movie theater, is the largest theatre in Berks County. The 1,700-seat movie complex will be equipped with digital sound and pictures. The project is due to be complete by the Summer of 2008.

Conversion of Old Berks Heim Annex to Community Correction Center
Conversion of the old Berks Heim Annex to a Community Correction Center started in August of this year. The former nursing home is being converted to a low security inmate housing facility and will provide educational and work-release training. Construction Management services are being provided by Shoemaker/Burkey Joint Venture.

GoggleWorks Apartments
Construction of the GoggleWorks Apartments will begin in the spring of 2008. The facility will be located at 135 Washington Street in downtown Reading, adjacent to the GoggleWorks Art Center. The upscale facility is a five-story structure rising diagonally from the northwest corner of Second and Washington Streets to Pear Street, and consists of 59 apartments above an 80-car partial underground parking level, and includes a gym. The one and two-bedroom apartments are sized at 1,000 square feet and 1,250 square feet, respectively. The first floor apartments closest to Washington Street will look out onto a landscaped terrace, while the higher apartments will have views of the Schuylkill River.

 
May 2007
2007 is proving to be a busy year. Burkey Construction has been awarded a five-year construction management contract by the City of Reading for various projects. This year’s major projects will involve the construction of two new firehouses and renovations to The Pagoda.

Also underway is the construction of a Berkshire Bank branch in Exeter Township as well as a two-story office building on Perkiomen Avenue in Mt. Penn. Burkey is also constructing an addition to SFS Intec’s warehouse facility in the Lincoln Corporate Center in Exeter Township.

Next month Burkey will begin construction of the 11-screen RC Theatre facility at 2nd and Washington Streets in Reading and conversion of the Berks Heim Annex to a Community Corrections Center for the County of Berks.

Burkey
Construction completed five Boscov's Department Stores on a very tight schedule for this Reading-based department store chain. Four of the five projects consisted of interior renovation to existing buildings in Monroeville, South Hills, Lehigh Valley, and Montgomeryville, Pennsylvania, each approximately 200,000 square feet. A new 200,000 square foot anchor store was constructed in the Logan Town Center Mall in Altoona, Pennsylvania  

 

May 2006
Burkey Construction was recently awarded the general trades package for the
additions and alterations to Governor Mifflin High School located in Shillington, Pennsylvania.  The project started in late June and consists of five additions and interior renovation of classrooms and corridors .  It is a multiple phased project and is expected to be completed in February 2008.

Burkey Construction was selected to renovate five Boscov’s Department Stores that were recently acquired in the tri-state area.
